Voorzijde:
De voorzijde draagteen profielportret van Michelangelo aan de rechterkant, gemaakt door Leoni die de kunstenaar daadwerkelijk kende en die qua gelijkenis als redelijk authentiek wordt beschouwd. In Omschrift: MICHAELANGELVS BONARROTVS FLORAESANN 88, waarin Michelangelo wordt beschreven als 88 jaar oud, hoewel hij eigenlijk pas 85 was. Er zijn geen aanwijzingen dat Michelangelo de misrekening erg vond.
Keerzijde:
De keerzijde toont een gespierde pelgrim, die een staf vasthoudt en een hond uitlaat. In omschrift: DOCEBO · INIQVOS · VT (TE) · IMPII · AD · TECONVEP dat afkomstig is uit Psalm 51:13 "Ik zal overtreders uw wegen leren, en zondaars zullen zich tot u bekeren." De boodschap is dat Michelangelo de weg heeft gebaand voor ware kunst, die door anderen moet worden gevolgd.

Leoni's celebrated medal actually got Michaelangelo's birthdate wrong; in fact the subject was only 85 in 1560. Nevertheless, Michaelangelo was pleased with the design and gifted Leoni some artworks as a gesture of thanks. Medal has been placed in a red velvet carton holder (removable). In the winter of 1560, Michelangelo had passed to Leoni a commission for the construction of a funerary monument for Gian Giacomo Medici. As a token of his thanks, Leoni made the original that this piece copies, for which the Florentine artist personally sat. |
