Achtergrond | Tekst Lei Lennarts: There is an interesting story behind this painting and this medal. First of all, I'm very much interested in numismatics. There are several examples of renaissance paintings that portrait persons holding a medal or a coin that can be traced to an existing artefact. In this case a young man is holding a medal with the face of the illustrious Cosimo de'Medici. It is suggested that the unknown person on this painting actually is Bertoldo di Giovanni. He was an artist and sculptor that was a pupil of Donatello and the teacher of Michelangelo. Bertoldo probably was also an illegitimate son of Cosimo de'Medici and if he is really the person on the painting that would most likely mean that he is holding a medal of which he is the author. I agree that there are many uncertainties, but the story is a good one! (source: Ulrich Middeldorf) |
